Deciding to Work Abroad

There are things you need to consider before deciding to go overseas.

Are you mentally prepared to leave your family behind? Although the main reason for working in a foreign land is to elevate the financial condition of our loved ones, we cannot help but think if we are ready to reside in a place miles away from them. Once we are confident that we are ready to start a new journey, it is also important to know if your loved-ones are also ready. It is always best to talk with each other to know if everyone in your family agrees with your decision of working abroad.

Do you have enough financial resources to cover your daily expenses while you are in your initial stage of settling and waiting for your first pay? It is important to know the average monthly house rent, food, transportation, internet and phone service and clothing. Knowing the estimate monthly cost to work in a country will help you not to fall short of your budget in meeting your financial priorities and avoiding to resort to lending institutions or lenders to borrow some money, thus, you will be able to save.

Is there enough determination in you to adapt to different challenges and new environment that you are about to face in a foreign land? Mental preparation and knowing what you are to expect abroad will help you easily adapt to different challenges and new environment. Listing down all possible negative expectations will help to create a plan on how to address those.

Do you have enough skills and experience to perform the job? Applying for a job that you are good at will help you stay long with an employer. With enough skills and experience, even if you are surrounded with other nationalities you will be able to perform your task. It is recommended to upgrade your skill-level before applying. If you are performing with your job, the employer will keep you.

Have you searched the right job for you?

There is a handful of job search portals out there where you can submit your application and be able to connect with different employers. There are recruitment agencies as well where you can submit your application in person. It is important to ensure that you made a thorough research about a company or an agency before accepting the offer. You need to avoid being scammed or pay unreasonable fees. Ask some of your friends or check with government agencies in-charge of providing licenses and approving job orders from those companies. There are many illegal recruitment agencies. Some will promise you a job but send you in a country on a tourist visa without any guarantee of a sure employment and some will ask you to pay fees upfront but no guarantee of a sure employment.

Have you received your employment offer or contract? When you receive your employment offer, it is important to read everything in it first before signing. Make sure that the contract mentions the following:

  1. Work-site location (the complete address where you will work).
  2. The duration or service length of the contract.
  3. The position or designation with detailed job description.
  4. The amount of monthly salary you are entitled to receive (with currency).
  5. The number of hours you will work in a day.
  6. The number of days off you are entitled in a week.
  7. The overtime pay rate.
  8. And other benefits such as accommodation, transportation, food, insurances (life, accident, disability, medical, dental, etc).

Working overseas would give a lot of benefits to an individual. Life-style and financial condition improvement, career advancements, skills improvement or skills upgrade opportunities, learning new cultures and visiting wonderful places.
